ENG 101

Description

This introductory course forms part of the English for Academic Purposes module for students in the Humanities track. Emphasis is on developing the foundations of the four skills: listening, speaking, reading, writing, and the introduction of basic grammar forms and language structure such as phrasal and sentence construction. Language focus is on the cultivation of basic repertoire of words and simple phrases related to personal information and immediate application, through communicative and functional activities. Students achieve Elementary proficiency (A1 – A2) on successful completion of semester one only.

 

ENG 102

Description

This English for Academic Purposes course serves as a foundation for students aiming for the Pre intermediate milestone. Integration of the four language skills is achieved using an increasing range of listening, reading, and writing texts and genres. The focus on communicative interaction is maintained and supported by means of a variety of familiar topics offering students greater exposure to authentic texts and cultivating an appreciation of all four language skills. On successful completion, students achieve Pre-Intermediate proficiency (A2). Humanities students complete the programme at the end of semester one.

 

ENG 103

Description

This Pre-intermediate Plus proficiency English for Academic Purposes course emphasizes on consolidating previously acquired language skills and promoting greater fluency and accuracy through real language use. The focus on communicative interaction is further maintained and supported by means of a variety of topics offering students greater exposure to authentic texts. A range of common communicative strategies is introduced to promote language fluency and control.  On successful completion, Humanities students achieve Pre-Intermediate Plus proficiency (A2 – B1).

 

ENG 104

Description

This English for Academic Purposes course serves as a foundation for students aiming for the Pre intermediate milestone. Integration of the four language skills is achieved using an increasing range of listening, reading, and writing texts and genres. The focus on communicative interaction is maintained and supported by means of a variety of familiar topics offering students greater exposure to authentic texts and cultivating an appreciation of all four language skills. On successful completion, students achieve Pre-Intermediate proficiency (A2) and progress to ENG 111.

 

ENG 105

Description

This Pre-intermediate Plus proficiency English for Academic Purposes course emphasizes on consolidating previously acquired language skills and promoting greater fluency and accuracy through real language use. The focus on communicative interaction is further maintained and supported by means of a variety of topics offering students greater exposure to authentic texts. A range of common communicative strategies is introduced to promote language fluency and control. On successful completion, students achieve Pre-Intermediate Plus proficiency (A2 - B1) and progress to ENG 112.

 

 

ENG 106

Description

This course to English for Academic Purposes is designed for students in the Science/Engineering track with adequate previous exposure to General English. The course provides a consolidation of the four language skills and develops students’ competencies through relevant academic contexts, a wider range of vocabulary and more advanced grammatical structures. Focus is on key cognitive skills such as analysing, synthesizing, and evaluating, needed for academic discourse. Another component of the module is a focus on development of Academic English writing.  Students achieve Intermediate Plus proficiency (B1 - B2) on successful completion and progress to ENG 113.

 

 

ENG 107

Description

This combined English for Academic Purposes and English for Specific Purposes course serves as a foundation for students aiming for the Pre-intermediate milestone. Integration of the four language skills is achieved using an increasing range of listening, reading, and writing texts and genres. The focus on communicative interaction is maintained and supported by means of a variety of familiar topics offering students greater exposure to authentic texts and cultivating an appreciation of all four language skills.  Meanwhile, the course also aims to teach students to cope with input texts (i.e. reading, listening, etc.), in the discipline of medicine. On successful completion, students achieve Pre-Intermediate proficiency (A2) and progress to ENG 114.

 

 

ENG 108

Description

This Pre-intermediate Plus proficiency English for Academic Purposes course emphasizes on consolidating previously acquired language skills and promoting greater fluency and accuracy through real language use. The focus on communicative interaction is further maintained and supported by means of a variety of topics offering students greater exposure to authentic texts. A range of common communicative strategies are introduced to promote language fluency and control. Meanwhile, the course also aims to teach students to cope with input texts (i.e. reading, listening, etc.), in the discipline of medicine. On successful completion, students achieve Pre-Intermediate Plus proficiency (A2 - B1) and progress to ENG 115.

 

ENG 109

Description

This course to English for Academic Purposes is designed for students in the Health track with adequate previous exposure to General English. The course provides a consolidation of the four language skills and develops students’ competencies through relevant academic contexts, a wider range of vocabulary and more advanced grammatical structures. Core component is the development of key cognitive skills such as analysing, synthesizing, and evaluating, needed for academic discourse. Another component of the module is the development of coping with input texts (i.e. reading, listening, etc.), in the discipline of medicine. Students achieve Intermediate Plus proficiency (B1 - B2) on successful completion and progress to ENG 116.

 

 

ENG 111

Description

This English for Academic Purposes course focuses on the advancement of the productive and receptive skills while fostering an appreciation of the language areas required for academic study. Cultivation of study skills and autonomous learning are integrated and form an integral part of the course. Students are exposed to a variety of authentic texts with an aim of developing effective language strategies and advancing the four language skills for greater communicative language competence. Students achieve Intermediate proficiency (B1) on successful completion.

 

 

ENG 112

Description

This English for Academic Purposes course focuses on developing students’ competency through relevant academic contexts, a wider range of vocabulary and more advanced grammatical structures. Conversational skills are developed for participating in academic discussions through group discussions, oral presentations and listening skills practice. Writing and oral development through inferring attitudes, feeling and mood, and communicative competencies such as reformulation, comprise the aims and outcomes of the course. Students achieve Intermediate Plus proficiency (B1 - B2) on successful completion.

 

 

ENG 113

Description

This combined English for Academic Purposes and English for Specific Purposes course focus on developing students’ competency through relevant academic contexts, a wider range of vocabulary and more advanced grammatical structures. Conversational skills are developed for participating in academic discussions through group discussions, oral presentations and listening skills practice. ENG 114

Description

This blended course consists of two strands.  The English for Academic Purposes aims to develop students’ academic discourse skills in the four key language areas of reading, listening, speaking, and writing, with focus on the advancement of productive and receptive skills in authentic contexts. The English for specific purposes strand introduces students to a range of medical terminology and common phrases employed in the medical field. Students achieve Intermediate proficiency (B1) on successful completion.

 

 

ENG 115

Description

This integrated English for Academic Purposes and English for Medical Purposes course introduces medical terminology via the concepts and methods pertinent to studying in an academic context. The cultivation of study skills, critical thinking, and the development of autonomous learning are integrated in the course, as are key academic skills required for successful participation at undergraduate level. The receptive skills of listening and reading for detail, gist, global understanding and deducing meaning from context and inference ensure students receive language input essential for academic preparation. Students achieve Intermediate Plus proficiency (B1 - B2) on successful completion.

 

 

ENG 116

Description

This integrated English for Academic Purposes and English for Medical Purposes course introduces medical terminology via the concepts and methods pertinent to studying in an academic context. The cultivation of study skills, critical thinking, and the development of autonomous learning are integrated in the course, as are key academic skills required for successful participation at undergraduate level.
